︎ Summary
Boys Blowing Up Bladders (2016) and Boys Picking Fruit (2016) pay homage to William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience. The works draw on the romanticised portrayals of young men found in Francisco de Goya’s paintings, which depict people picking fruit and blowing up bladders.
Created from plaster casts of medical and sexual consumables, the sculptures contrast this earlier sense of playful curiosity and innocence with today’s adolescent experience—shaped by body-image anxieties and the pressures of self-awareness around sexual identity.
